Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Hello, i am Arielle. I'm am a legally blind sophomore in high school. I was wondering if anyone would know any good magnifiers , screen readers, or a magnifier screen reader that is very compatible with computers. I have used Zoomtext 9.1 magnifier/screenreader. Recently zoomtext has been constantly freezing and my school work has doubled since last year. I don't have the time to go and fix the major bugs in zoomtext anymore. so I was wondering if anyone would know about good accessible software. If anyone has any suggestions please relpy ASAP.
Thanks,
Arielle
P.S. I have also used JAWS, but the only problem with JAWS is the voice synthesizer is very robotic and hard to understand.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

oh. Their is also Narrator that comes with windows, but it sucks with a capital s on the inernet!

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

I know. But i'm used to either nvda or jaws commands.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Please note that screen readers have different comands.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Oh god. I hate that one. I used it before and it's very hard for me to use. I was using the commands that nvda has and those commands do not work. I think nvda is easier. At least my version of it is.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Their is also another screen reader out their called Thunder, and it is free.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Yes it is. I think that it will work good enough for you.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Yea but if you think about it there aren't many choices to choose from. Is nvda free?

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Wow.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

The only screen reader i have heard of is JAWS for a PC and VoiceOver for Mac

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

You haven't tried nvda have you? It's also a screen reader. I'm using it right this second.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Yea i have heard of windows eyes, but i don't know any one who uses it. I know a lot of people who use JAWS. I know some people who use Macs because it ihas its own screenreader and magnifier on the operating system
yea i didn't mean to post twice

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Don't you hate it when your computer posts a reply more than once?

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

You know, have you tried using window-eyes?

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

hey, arille do you use a cane or do you see to the point that you don't need it and it's cool that you live in atlanta

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Yes. It comes with one but i'm not sure if it will work the way you want it because i've never used it but you can try it if you want.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Do you mean the Magnifier that is part of windows? it doesn't do much like all of the built in accessibility options on windows operating systems. I'm not talking about the screen readers or magnifiers you buy and download to your computer.....

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

yes. It also works with windows xp. And computers come with a magnifier.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Deos this program work well on windows opertating system well? i am asking this since i used to use Zoomtext 9.1 magnifier screen reader and its constantly freezing my windows XP.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Hi. My name is Chris and i use the same screen reader like paulina but i'm using a different synthesizer. It's called sappy5 i prefer that synthesizer because it speaks regular english. Anyway, it's called nvda just like paulina told you.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

I live in Atlanta

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Well, i read large print and the keys on my computer have large , high contrast stickers so i can see them. I'm really taking a guess on looking at the screen and stuff...lol
If i spell anything wrong its because i am not looking at the screen.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

hey, arille thanks for telling me what you think about where do you live i live in southern CA and yes i do go to public school and they did try to get me jaws but like i said befor i don't they could because it had something to do with a licence thanks for trying o, how are you using the computer if you don't have a screenreader Paulina

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Paulina, maybe you don't have enough space on your computer or JAWS and the program you are using don't cooperate when downloaded to the same computer? I know Zoomtext and JAWS do not work together at all. MAGic is made by Freedom Scientific , the same company that made JAWS. Some AT person at CVI (center for the visually impaired) in Atlanta suggested I use MAGic. Unfortunately , when i tried to download a trial form freedom scientific , MAGic said I did not download all of the files for it to run. The strange part was it was talking when i opened the program. I think it didn't work because Zoomtext and JAWS don't work together at all. Sozoomtext and MAGic don't work together either. Uh, i don't know who you can get JAWS for free, but there is a 40 minute trail for JAWS (I don't think that is much help if you would rather use JAWS). I am also looking into other screen readers. Apple has their own screen reader built into their computers, called VoiceOver. My the county i live in is PC based so i would have to buy a Mac myself. Do you go to Public school? They should be able to get you a copy of JAWS. Since JAWS has been around for over 20 years.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

cool i agree i wish i had jaws but i don't i have NVDA and i don't know why they cant install it do think you can help get it without paying i tried asking my teacher but they technition said that it something to do with lincencing sorry the words are spelled wrong i am use to writting in braille Paulina

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

Thanks guys. Paulina, i need a "bandage" for now since three of my classes like to give me a lot of essays to write. I think i will start using JAWS as a back up. too be honest i don't know any other screen readers besides JAWS. Its just surprising to find out how Assisted technology is advancing but computer wise nothing has really changed. Zoomtext and JAWS have been around for yeas and i haven't known a lot of people who use other screenreaders or magnifiers

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

You know, with Jaws, you can change the synth to Real speak solo ddirect if it is installed.

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!

hello, my name is paulina i'm 16 and i liegally blind but i can i little and i think a screenreader called NVDA would be good for you because it reads everything but the only thing wrong with it speaks in an english accient i think i would be cool for you i do prefer jaws and i think you should try it again i think you can change the synthsizer on there nice to meet you hopes this helps Paulina

Re:Help: Need magnifier/screenreader suggestions!!!!
