Braille in class
Posted by beccawhizkid on 12/8/2009 at 7:59 PM
I am loosing some of my vision right now and I cant read the large print they give me in class sometimes. I am considering doing half of my classes in braille next year. Do you guys use a brailler in class-that thing is awfully loud or do you just read stuff and someone writes for you and then writes it in braille after. I use a laptop and I know there are braille displays that will help with worksheets and stuff but i dont know about the writing. Do you guys think braille would help? I am going into a full IB program next year and for english and social studies we will get 20 page articles each night and I just cant handle that visually right now.

my teachers wont let me use headphones because then I can't hear what they are saying. My classes are lecture based

hey guys i use a braillenote in my classes but since you are barely learning maybe you should stick with learning braille on the brailler first and if you decide to use it in class try to braille slow enough to where you can hear and don't braille to fast i did hear of a new one that is suppose to be lighter and quieter i don't know a lot about it but i'm knot sure hope this helps!! good luck guys!!

I like chemistry alot and my teacher is great. It really isnt hard it just involves alot of math. My class is an applied chemistry class where we get to talk about topics and then how they come up in the real world (like medicine and stuff). I am partially sighted so I can see more things than others. My periodic table of elements is usually magnified bigger than my head to see stuff like subscripts and annotations but you can always adapt.
If you are thinking about taking it-take it. It is a really fun class to take and the lab experiments are really cool. I usually dont touch the flames because I cant see them (smart idea right, lol) but everything else I can do with the help of my lab partner. I didnt think i could ever do lab work before chemistry

Use the laptop with the display. type notes and type it like you would type it regularly. If you want to check and read back, use the display. Then with the books, get kurzwild and a scanner. scann in the pages, if there is no braille book, or get a book that is on e-files. It really helps. I use e-files, and it's a miracle compared to reading. I use speech after class and just use head phone and just listen. It's a hundred thousands of times faster! School, is adaptable, anything in life is adaptable, or almost.

I've never used braille in class so I don't know what to suggest about that.
What sized text are they giving you? Maybe they can have you try out differant sizes or something. I wish you luck! Sounds like the laptop will be very useful to you.
