Thanks Randal. A question: do you go to public school? I don't know if the public schools in my area are equipped to deal with people with severe vision handicaps, so I was wondering. If you do go to public school, what is it like?

What is the hardest thing about having a vision impairment?
Oh, also, I've been wondering, do you know how all of these people who are blind or have vision disabilities use the computer? I think that a lot of them have screen readers. Do you use one of those, or is your vision good enough to use a computer? I can't even imagine what it would be like to deal with technology.

How does the jaws and other screen reader software work? I've been confused about that. When you log onto a website, does it read everything on the page? How do you browse?

Hello I'm Mimi and I'm totally blind. I am older, I graduated college and so I can answer any of your questions with certainty.
I use JAWS and yes, sometimes it reads more than you would like it too. A lot of browsing is done with the arrow keys, you use the up and down arrows to go up and down on the page and the left and right to go side by side. It's all about combining keys to get jaws to do and read what you want it to read.

Do you guys have any stories that can help me figure out what you're going through? (If you feel that I am being rude or prying will you please let me know?)
Of course, no problem in the slightest. :)Posted by Bob452 on 8/7/2010 at 10:33 PM
I am sure that most of us here can pick up on your good intentions at heart, and we would not think it in the least bit rude of you for asking your questions. After all, you are only curious, and you are satisfying that curiosity in a thoughtful and mature way. You will later come to find that there are many here who would gladly share with you their individual stories, which can seem as different as day and night, and you will discover as well that there are other stories that share commonalities. There will be stories from those both younger and older who have learned to deal with their blindness and live happy and full lives. Alternatively, you will also hear stories from those both younger and older who are still bitter and resentful of their blindness and who have not yet learned how to cope. Hopefully, you will come to discover that we are all different from one another and that blindness is perhaps the only small commonality we share. As a side note, there are many different causes of blindness, and blindness can vary from total blindness to having some usable vision. We, like most people on this spinning oasis, walk different lives but share similar joys and pains.
Lastly, because not everyone can be an eloquent writer, it might be easier to hear people talk about their blindness over the telephone. If you are interested in talking to a community of people who are also blind, there is a free telephone service called Talk Shop where I am sure you can find people who would gladly share their stories with you. Just simply dial the provided number, follow the prompts, and, for beginners, start with the Welcome Room where you can ask questions about the service and express your interest about wanting to learn about what it means to be blind. As an important disclaimer, anyone who uses the Talk Shop service must be 18 years of age or older. With that said, here is the number: 724-444-3592. Enjoy.

Thanks Matrix. Unfortunately, I'm not eighteen, so I'll just have to stick with this. I'm actually impressed with how eloquent you guys are when you can't even see what you are writing. I've really enjoyed this chance to get to know people much different than me.

I can see what I'm writing aecause I use a braille display. Being blind is hard because I know I will never drive.
