Did anyone start learning braille in HS? Or JRHS? If so how did you learn? (class? By yourself?) Has anyone taken Hadley courses? Are they hard? Are they very time consuming?

Posted by Kenzie on 9/30/2010 at 6:45 PMHi! I started to learn Braille in 7th grade. I was in a class but mostly my mom taught it to me. And I preffered the one on one though. It took some time in the beginning but after a while it got easier!

Posted by rachel N on 9/30/2010 at 7:08 PMI learnt the alphabet extra quick or at least for the district I was in. but dad made me learn it at home over breaks and weekends. It was stressful then but I got through it really quick. but he also made me do that with the multiplication tables too.

Posted by Chlorine17 on 9/30/2010 at 10:10 PMi learned braille when i was 5, but from what i understand it is more difficult 2 learn the older u get. if u r sighted but u know that u r going 2 lose ur sight at some point, i recomend learning it asap. there r two ways people learn braille. the sighted way, and the not sighted way. sighted people often times learn it with their eyes. they look at the bumps like they would print and lurn it that way. it's easier i've heard, but once ur sight is gone, u have 2 relearn it with ur hands. good luck

Posted by D&Bcheerleader on 10/1/2010 at 6:41 PMwow, well the first braille/print book i read it took an hour to read, at least! it was the Dr. Seuss ABC book. that was earlier this summer though. lol
I can not learn the sighted way nor do I want to. I can not see the dots on the page. How do you start reading with more than one finger?
Re:Braille
Posted by Thrill Monster on 10/1/2010 at 11:15 PMI read with both fingers.

Posted by hptwilighter on 10/13/2010 at 11:33 AMI started reading braille when I was in Pre school. You read braille with more than one finger by starting with your right hand on the line or word you are reading then take your left hand and follow your right. I use my right index finger furst then my left index finger.

Posted by Wingman on 11/15/2010 at 12:13 AMI began learning it on my own last year during 1st semester
and I'll be taking courses with Hadley by the end of the month .I am in 10th grade and its been an interesting experience It takes me a long time to read a great deal of the things i have but they are primarily instruction manuals i got that go with my reader.
It's taken me very little time to learn most of the alphabet i've found that the t is one of my favorite letters.
I downloaded this song called the Braille Rap which sped up my progress drastically. I also can write with a slate and stylus as i learned the letters i started brailling some of my own work I had in Microsoft word.

It works real well if you like to learn things audibly it gives you something to remind you of and it has motions listed in the lyrics that could be used if you like doing things hands on as well
