Re: I almost stepped on a snake

How long does that take?

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

At first, it can be a bit uncomfortable and take some getting used to it. But, overall it becomes extremely easy to put them in and take them out. They don't hurt to wear after your used to it.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Does it hurt to get contacts?

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Yeah, some places do a better job with it, but it isn't fun. I have had a number of them over the years. It is all about getting the right fit of the contacts. I have smaller eyes, or so I am told... (it is the mongolian decent in me).

It will work out, just go in being strong and prepared to dow what you have to do.

Good luck!

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I had the ERG two days ago and UGH what an ordeal that was. we had to fight to get the contacts in and they fell out the first time. During the last part when the machine filled up with light to start the day time portion i blinked and they started hurting me and he had to take them out and then glue them back in. ouch my eyes still hurt but i sure hope the results tell whats wrong.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Ohhhhh I've Had a ERG test before. It was done in Miami and I tried to do it awake but when the lady tried putting the Contacts lens in my eyes it hurt really bad so they had to put me to sleep for the process. It was not fun but it still worked great. And for tips for talking to your teachers and stuff well just keep on trying because what the people at your school are doing is not exceptable. They need to get the materials that you need to you as soon as posible, that is there job. You can't give up because even though you don't have perfect sight doesn't mean that you can get treated differently from your peers. I have never really had that problem because my vision teacher has allways been good at getting the things that I need and any new types of technology that might help. You need someone like that so you can do good in school. Like I said before there is know reason why you shouldn't be treated like every one else. You might need large print and stuff but thats just how you read and do your work. The school needs to provide those things for you so you can be successful. and if your school still doesn't do anything contact the school board of education (or what ever its called) they are the people that are in charge of all of the schools in your county. Tell them whats going on and they should be able to fix it. There are probably other blind or visually impaired students in your county, I wonder if they go through the same things that you go through and if so there needs to be a stop to it.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Thanks Joe S. thats very much appreciated

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

ERG, I believe is an electroretinography test or exam. I believe they have come a long way. Back in the day, it was a contact lens with little electrodes and wires coming from it that they fit onto your eye. It was a little uncomfortable, but not horrible. You had to keep your eye open while they did the actual test. I know it has come further along since then. I probably need to get one of those in the near future just to track the progress of my retina and eye.

I looked it up for you and here you go:
What is electroretinography?

Electroretinography (ERG) is an eye test used to detect abnormal function of the retina (the light-detecting portion of the eye). Specifically, in this test, the light-sensitive cells of the eye, the rods and cones, and their connecting ganglion cells in the retina are examined. During the test, an electrode is placed on the cornea (at the front of the eye) to measure the electrical responses to light of the cells that sense light in the retina at the back of the eye. These cells are called the rods and cones.

How is an ERG done?

The patient assumes a comfortable position (lying down or sitting up). Usually the patient's eyes are dilated beforehand with standard dilating eye drops. Anesthetic drops are then placed in the eyes, causing them to become numb. The eyelids are then propped open with a speculum, and an electrode is gently placed on each eye with a device very similar to a contact lens. An additional electrode is placed on the skin to provide a ground for the very faint electrical signals produced by the retina.

During an ERG recording session, the patient watches a standardized light stimulus, and the resulting signal is interpreted in terms of its amplitude (voltage) and time course. This test can even be performed in cooperative children, as well as sedated or anesthetized infants. The visual stimuli include flashes, called a flash ERG, and reversing checkerboard patterns, known as a pattern ERG.

What do the electrodes do?

The electrodes measure the electrical activity of the retina in response to light. The information that comes from each electrode is transmitted to a monitor where it is displayed as two types of waves, labeled the A waves and B waves.

How are eletroretinography readings made?

Readings during eletroretinography are usually taken first in normal room light. The lights are then dimmed for 20 minutes, and readings are again taken while a white light is shined into the eyes. The final readings are taken as a bright flash is directed toward the eyes.

Why is an ERG done?

An ERG is useful in evaluating both inherited (hereditary) and acquired disorders of the retina. An ERG can also be useful in determining if retinal surgery or other types of ocular surgery such as cataract extraction might be useful.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I greatly despise algebra 2 with a deeeeeeeeep hate.
I liked math till 7th grade then blah it was all over my ties with math as a friend only go as far as division.
I can't see the board at all let alone my large print in front of me and whenever i'd talk to my teachers about it its like putting in a problem you can only work out by hand on the computer and it comes up an error they don't understand as hard as i try. I am completely frustrated with them luckily my last day in that class is the last day before finals and i only have to show up for one final and its in scivis. The worst part about it is i tell everyone who'll listen at the school that i can't see and my current assistive aids don't work any more and they won't do anything about it, its like they can't mentally comprehend what they can do to help. At this point i don't even speak up and tell them my paper is too small or anything like that because it won't be any better its like why bother. every thing technology wise i bought myself to use since I've been waiting since the summer before first semester started to get Zoomtext or something like it(i even told them where to download free ones) and in middle school plus last year my large print books never came in. I don't have an assistant or a VI teacher at the moment to help me either because of all these doctor visits slowing the eval that i probably should of had 3 or 4 years ago.
and at this point because my last EC teach got taken off my case for stepping out of bounds I am living a literal H*** in my algebra class because the EC teach that is in there with me is making me pay for it.
Which we(my family and i) think that after this ERG thing they'll be eating some crow.
------------------------------------------------------------------
does anyone have any tips on how to remind teachers, etc. to tell me where a room is rather than the room number. The main school building was new 50 years ago so it isn't entirely up to code and with this construction going on at the school(by the way they finished the building i told yall about that they were building last semester it is very nice and traveling through that construction wasn't too bad after all, now they are building a new gym and they have been gutting the building for the past few months and making everybody on the back hall high. One of the best things that comes out of dodging construction in the hall is they are kicking my art teacher out so i'll get to take my final early and not have to attend 1st block for the rest of the year, its been interesting and i haven't stepped in a construction hole since 1st semester and i have successfully traveled from the main building to the anex which i have only traveled once since the new building was built. One thing that the construction workers did is very pointless okay they have a side walk that leads to the anex heres the funny part it discontinues right before it hits the cement driveway to the building it is literally one piece of side walk apart so your choice now is go through the main building, jump the tangled grass net or go through it and fall over) they just post a sign and if you ask where something is everyone gives the same answer room ...
-----------------------
Hey Joe S.,
Do you know what an ERG is????
I've been SOo curious since April and i still don't know what it is and what i read on sites makes it sounds more painful than it is I am on pens and needles about the idea, Everyone i've talked to about it hasn't a clue i sure hope you have at least an idea about it.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Oh well my teacher knows about me being visually impaired and she does try her best to get all of the materials that we will be doing or using in class to my braille transcriber so she can braille them. Its just that sometimes she forgets and when my braille transcriber E-mails her to ask for the class assignments she sometimes won't E-mail back. I do talk to all of my teachers, and not just my math teacher if I have a problem, don't understand something, or anything else that I might need. My parents are allways telling me to advicate for my self so thats what I do. Most of the time they are understanding but sometimes they can be harsh.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Have you spoken with the teacher outside of class to see if he/she can be more descriptive when teaching? I know this can be tough, but it is good practice for the future. What about getting the lessons and examples prior in whatever format you can access. So, large print, braille, or whatever you can access at your desk. That way you have access to the same information. You should speak with your Teacher of the Visually impaired about this as well.

That is tough.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Oh Wow you find a lot of random snakes. Do you like Algebra? I just took my finals for it and it was HARD. My teacher didn't even finish teaching the whole book so my class didn't know 2 chapters worth of information making the test even harder. I used to love math but once I got in to Algebra I kind of changed my mind. I can see pretty good its just that I can't read really tiny text and when my teacher writes something on the board I can't read it but thats not really the problem because I have sort of an assistant that sits with me in that class and tells me what my teacher is writing or she brailles it for me. I just really don't like when my math teacher puts graphs up and she points to something on the graph and says "look at this class and see how it corrisponds with this?" and its like I have know idea what she's pointing to so how am I supposed to know. My assistant could tell me what my teacher is doing but still its not the same. Do you have any of these problems or can you see the board or whatever good enough that you don't need any of that?

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I'm okay I guess my algebra 2 class is really getting to me.

You know my Biology teacher last semester told me that snakes wouldn't come near as long as I had my cane. I guess I'll really get to test that theory this summer if not sooner.

Which that snake was not the first of my encounters last year I warned my mom just before she stepped on a coiled up black snake it must have been at least 6 foot.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Lol that must have been scary. That reminds me of when I allmost stepped on a snake a couple of years ago. I was talking to my friend as I was walking in to my garage with my head turned toards my friend and right when I turned back toards the garage there was a long fat snake slithering across the floor. At first it didn't occur to me what it was but when I found out I started running and screaming. Probably not the smartest thing to do but at least I got away from it. Oh yeah I am doing good I guess. I have my algebra exams tommarro fun! (NOT REALLY). So how are you?

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I hope you have a good day too

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I hope you both have a good day.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Im glad you are doing well i'm doing well too

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Hey, that's sounds pritty crazy! I would be scared, how are you guys doing? I'm doing pritty wel hope you guys are doing well.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I'm sorry, that's too bad. I hope things work out next time for both of us.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

well, i'm not sure entirely what happened basically long story short we just couldn't get things together.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

What happened with Maggie?

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Yeah that's what I read I hope you get accepted there.
Since my plans with Maggie didn't work out in the next couple of months I plan to apply either there or Guide dogs for the blind

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I'm applying there because they are the best school to accomadate people with strict diets or other disabilities.

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I haven't a clue I've been trying to figure that out since I went to the eye doctor in April.

I thought about applying to guide dogs of the desert a while back please keep me posted

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I am applying for Gide Dogs Of The Desert in Palm Springs. What is an ERG?

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

Cool I wish you luck on your journey to get one where are you applying I thought about guide dogs for the blind. Please keep me posted.
Hey have you ever had a ERG that's where I'm going in the next couple of weeks and I've been on pens and needles about it

Re:I almost stepped on a snake

I'm good. That is like the time when we found a snake behind our couch. lol But it was my sister's pet snake. I'm doing good, I have a docotor's appointment tomorrow so he can fill out the qequired parts of my guide dog application.
