I'm New to this
Posted by abass on 4/25/2012 at 10:07 AM
Hi everyone. I joined this site in order to gain some friends who kinda understand the joys and hardships of being blind/visually impaired. I don't know of any blind of vi people my age at all. I feel like it will be good for me to gain some friends like me. All of my in school friends are 'normal'. That is as vision is concerned.

Hey Tek Nerds jk,
I don't have much technology. I have a victor reader stream which belongs to the school district, I also have a laptop, and an i-pod touch which I like to text on.

Cool! I have an online college class this summer. Other than that I plan to work more with my horse, do more research on guide dog schools, go to a mini camp, and I might get a job. My summer has already started. This will be my 3rd week out. I also want to meet someone new people. My one friend is going to be away all summer so I am going to watch her guinea pigs. Greenville is the farthest place I will probably go this summer.

Hmm, well the braillenote is like $4000 and the refreshabraille is like $1500. I don't really have any plans for the summer.
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Wingman on 5/27/2012 at 1:44 AM
At school I have a CCTV at school that's a literal dinosaur for art projects. Back before my eyes got too bad I bought a CCTV scanner it broke the third day. I wish I had the option to learn Braille when I was younger that way I could of just transferred over. Oh well que sera sera
This summer I plan to train for cross country and try to beat the school record. My mom told me we might go on a road trip so that will be fun. And I hope to get my guide dog. Right now getting in contact with my doctors and one of their O&Ms not being nearby is slowing things down. Here's hoping I get it soon.
My mom is going to get me a running partner so I can actually run.

Wow that sucks! I don't know how much the braillenote and refreshabraille costs but if you like them and they help you it might be a good investment for you. Do you have any summer plans?
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Devin Prater on 5/26/2012 at 9:57 PM
Hmm, I been knowing braille since like first grade, but I don't use it much cause I only get to really use it at school or during the suhool year, I have to give up my braillenote and refreshabraille at the end of the school year.
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by abass on 5/26/2012 at 9:53 PM
Sweet! I love being able to voom in. I also love watching you tube videos on it. I guess it is because the video covers most of the screen.
Lindsay as far as re Braille I have been learning it on and off throughout my life. I know the alphabet but I hated learning contractions. I don't really know why. My fingers get really numb and it kinda hurts. It may be because I don't read it all the time.
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Devin Prater on 5/26/2012 at 9:17 PM
Well I'm really starting to love my iPod, just today I've started to record youtube videos with it. :-)
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by abass on 5/26/2012 at 9:01 PM
Wow that's awesome Londsay! Have you looked into CCTV scanners? My transition person helped me get a mini CCTV that I am starting to use more and more. I also have a large desktop CCTV. It has helped SO MUCH. Before I got it I had to hunch over with my face almost touching the paper I was trying to read. Now I can get the print large enough to where I can sit back and read. I am waiting for my 18th birthday to get the new iPad. I got to play with a second generation iPad and it was so amazing how much it helped me. I use my iPod for most stuff except for my online classes. I use my laptop for those.
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Wingman on 5/17/2012 at 11:45 PM
I just turned 18, i also love computers.
Lets see tech wise i have(this will be a long list)
-2 Hp laptops ones old and the other i use every now and again for school i got it mostly for zoomtext at school. It has such a huge screen unfortunately it made my backpack weigh like 25 pounds and i'm serious my teacher told me that and told me he was NEVER going to carry my backpack for me again because of it
-i recently got a Victor stream which has been pretty good for me especially since i got my RFB&D books to work on it now just the NLS books i'm having trouble with
-i have a second generation ipod, so no screenreader
-iphone 4g my best friend it has literally saved my life at school especially with the Zoomreader app. I also have the Ally app, Ariadne GPS, Lookaround GPS, just to name a few. One of the tech guys from service for the blind told me about some cool new apps but i have to save up for them the Read2Go app being one of them. There's this cool game app designed specifically for blind called Papa Sangre its cool as heck a bit difficult even when your used to using your ears. If you get it don't freak out if it speaks Spanish it only does for like the very beginning the rest is English.
-ipad first generation my best friend as well ever since i got it i leave the laptop at home, i also got the keyboard for it
I love voiceover, SO much. When i get good at braille i hope to be able to get a braille display eventually. In another lesson my VI is going to start teaching me some contracted since I've gotten threw the alphabet quickly and a lot of signs I've been running into are contracted. Our emergency procedure sign in the new building at my school is contracted.
-At school i have Jaws on my computer and can't wait till i go to college to get it on my home computer since Zoomtext doesn't work for me anymore.
-oh i also have a Acer laptop that the dreaded Internet Explorer Exploder crashed. So it's pretty much just gathering dust.
-My desktop is nice, i just got a new one when my old computer crashed. My monitor is a 32in tv.
The problem with Zoomtext on your laptop sounds like you need to get more RAM installed on your computer, since Zoomtext uses such a large amount more ram can often fix the lag.

Hmm, I don't have much use for the GPS programs yet, but I'm sure I will when I get out of school and stuff.

Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Devin Prater on 5/14/2012 at 9:03 PM
Well, I just wanted a new pair of headphones and an iTunes gift card, and a bookshare account when I was 18, now I have them! Unfortunately I don't have enough money for the read to go app, and my gosh, I really respect bookshare, so I won't pirate their app, well I haven't pirated ever since I became a better Christian, but anyways I will have to get a nother iTunes card and buy the read to go app, since I won't always have that lovely braillenote with me, but then again, the android app is pretty good I guess, it gets the job done, but I also want it on my iOS too. I think I know why its so pricy too, cause those darn voices they force you to get with the app. Ugh, look at me, going from topic to topic. Ah well, I blame my ADD. :-)
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by abass on 5/14/2012 at 8:46 PM
I also have a laptop with zoomtext on it. I don't really use it that much beacause the zoom text is so laggy and I hate having it reading to me. I am hoping to get the new iPad for my 18th birthday.
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Devin Prater on 5/14/2012 at 8:22 PM
Well I have an iPod now, which is what I'm writing this on. I also have:
•a HP computer
•a Samsung Stratosphere
•and an old Dell windows XP laptop which I never use LOL
•and a Braille note and refreshabraille to use with computer and iPod from the school, I'll be really sad to see those go when the summer comes, ah well, I'll just have to get Daisy books from bookshare and be happy with it. :-)
•I also have a wonderful apple wireless keyboard.

Hi Devin! Nice to meet you. I go to an Early college. I am the only VI person at my school. I also enjoy technology very much. I think my favorite piece of technology would be my iPod touch.
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Devin Prater on 5/13/2012 at 8:39 PM

I cherish every moment with Beauty. She has taught me so much. Through the rough times and aggravating people she's there for me. I know it may sound silly but she understands.
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Wingman on 5/8/2012 at 6:21 PM
It's been going pretty good for me lately. Owning your own horse must be cool
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by abass on 5/8/2012 at 10:06 AM
Happy birthday! I love horseback riding and I am lucky enough to have my own horse. I also love reading, writing, listening to music, being outside, cooking, and swimming. Kayaking sounds really fun! I have been conoeing but I haven't done that in about 6 or 7 years. I read your earlier posts and I was really surprised by the way you were treated by your school. I kinda know how that is. I never kept a VI teacher for over 2 years and my O and M instructors were the same way. Right now I am waiting to start O and M in the summer. I am not learing Braille right now but because of some vision loss lately I might have to start learning it again. How is school going for you?
Re: I'm New to thisPosted by Wingman on 5/8/2012 at 9:04 AM

I'm in a similar situation I am the only blind/ visually impaired kid and boy has it brought me a mix of problems and fun experiences. Currently my only blind/ visually impaired friends are on here
Today's my birthday
