Re: Leaving tomorrow for Guide Dog School!
Posted by Joe S on 9/21/2012 at 9:21 AMI have friends who would say that college is a great time to have a guide dog, and many of the schools offer summer programs specifically aimed at college students. It is an adjustment, but many would tell you it will be a great experience.
As I have said, as a cane user, a guide dog is a much smoother and often faster tool to travel through the environment. I have visited guide dog schools and done practice runs. I travel at a good rate with a cane, but there is no comparison. You still have to have good orientation and mobility skills.
All the best! Keep us posted on your adventure.
Sincerely,
Joe S.

Posted by Wingman on 9/21/2012 at 9:11 PMAWESOME!!! Goodluck and have fun Sarah I wish you the best. Currently I haven't heard anything from Leader Dogs yet so I'm still waiting. If I don't hear anything by next Thursday I'm going to email them though since that'll be day 60 on the application process wait period. I'm nervous but I guess no news is good news till then but it is nerve wracking waiting and I'd rather get my dog before college. Cross country has been going well I've ran three meets and a invitational. And have without trying gathered quite the fan club. People from the other schools approached my mom and I about it. I've come a long way so far, I can actually do push ups now, I at this point can run a 5k at 45:30 and will hopefully be in the thirties by the end of the season.

Posted by Joe S on 9/26/2012 at 10:35 AMFirst, welcome to AFB's TeenConnect. I think you will find a good group of teens here sharing their thoughts, ideas, and advice on all kinds of topics. We try our best to restrict and filter persons from posting full names, email addresses, and bad language on this message board. As it is aimed allowing teens to sharing information and such.
I am going to go out on a limb, are you wondering how to post a new message to the board, not reply, but start a new conversation?
The link is all the way at the bottom of the page, on TeenConnect.
I just took a shot at it.
Sincerely,
Joe S.
