Rights and Permissions

Permission to Publish

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is the caretaker of Helen Keller's archival collection and legacy. AFB charges fees to maintain its collection and for the time that it takes to undertake research and to supply images to scholars, publishers, and the general public.

AFB does not claim copyright to all of the images in its collection; as a result, our contract grants permission (and not copyright) to use images from our archive. The researcher is responsible for obtaining copyright permission to images that do not belong to the American Foundation for the Blind.

Organizations and businesses wishing to publish an image will be required to sign a contract acknowledging the following:

a) The responsibility for ascertaining whether any additional rights exist, and for obtaining all necessary permissions, remains with the researcher.

b) Images will not be reproduced for any other purpose without the permission of AFB.

c) AFB's licensing agreement cannot be changed in any way.

d) Rights to all materials in our AFB archival collections are nonexclusive and nontransferable.

e) All photographic archival usage will be clearly credited as follows: "Courtesy of the American Foundation for the Blind, Helen Keller Archives."

Allowable Uses

We permit educational use of our photographs. Images that are downloaded from our website for educational use (non-commercial) do not require special permission from the Archives. However, we request that all photographic archival usage is clearly credited as follows: "Courtesy of the American Foundation for the Blind, Helen Keller Archives."

Images in the collection may be used as reference and source material for original artwork depicting Helen Keller without additional charge. However, we request that the Helen Keller Archives at the American Foundation for the Blind is credited with providing the source material as follows: "Courtesy of the American Foundation for the Blind, Helen Keller Archives."
