This webinar covers the importance of contrast sensitivity function for the person with low vision, how to measure it, and how to increase contrast in the home and other environments. In addition, the presenter discusses illumination, different types of lamps available and pros and cons for using each depending on type of vision and activity in which person is engaged, positioning of light, and controlling for glare.

This 60-minute webinar will review the need for increased illumination by most persons with a visual impairment, compared to that of persons with no vision loss, for tasks such as reading. The need for increased illumination as we get older, especially for near tasks such as reading, will also be discussed. Various options for lighting will be summarized, including incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, full spectrum ("daylight"), and LED, along with some of the advantages and disadvantages of each. LED lighting will receive special emphasis in this presentation, particularly featuring its characteristics, benefits, strengths, and weaknesses. Finally, the critical role of positioning of lighting in regards to the target task and the user will be explored.
