What We Do
One of our most unique aspects at the Center is Esther's Place, a specially designed and fully equipped model apartment that you can tour. Each room includes accessible products and appliances, either designed or adapted for people with varying degrees of vision loss. The environmental design of Esther's Place includes:
- lighting,
- color and texture contrast,
- and physical arrangement
to enhance safety, and promote independence.
Esther's Place is available for tours and hands-on demonstrations on weekdays to individuals and groups. If you cannot visit the Center in person, either call (214) 352-7222 or email dallas@afb.net for information and connection to resources in your community.
The Center periodically hosts educational seminars on an array of topics for individuals with vision loss, their family members and the professionals who work with them. Check the Calendar of Events to see a list of upcoming seminars. Many of the presentations held at the Center make their way to the AFB website or to the AFB eLearning Center as webinars or podcasts.
As a part of our ongoing community outreach efforts, Center staff or volunteers often make presentations to groups throughout North Texas. By participating on advisory boards and exhibiting at local health fairs, we also help to raise awareness of the needs of and resources for people with vision loss. Interested community groups can schedule meetings in our Great Room, which can include a tour of Esther's Place, by emailing adavis@afb.net or calling (469) 522-1801.
