JLTLI 2005 Education Work Group Activities
Assessment Issues for Children with Visual Impairments
The following documents are a summary of the Education Work Group activities from the 2005 Josephine L. Taylor Institute (JLTLI) sessions held at the Long Wharf Marriott in Boston, Mass., March 11-13.
The theme for the Education Work Group, "Building Assessment Initiatives for Schools," continued the work of the 2004 Jo Taylor and gave participants concrete steps to apply to local programs to build accountability through assessments in public and private schools for students with visual impairments.
Three critical segments required to build a strong assessment were emphasized:
- a parent training/awareness model about assessment accommodations
- test administrator's guide for students with visual impairments
- a checklist and guidelines for state testing departments to use when building contracts with test developers
IDEA: Enhancing Educational Opportunities for Children who Are Blind or Visually Impaired
Additionally, many JLTLI conference participants attended "IDEA: Enhancing Educational Opportunities for Children who Are Blind or Visually Impaired" workshops to gain an understanding of the recently passed legislation and receive up-to-date information on how educators and advocates can best use these provisions to build stronger service delivery options and instructional strategies for children.
