Types of Eye Care Professionals

Your first step toward assessing your condition is to figure out who you need to talk to. Two types of eye care professionals you might consider are ophthalmologists and optometrists.

Ophthalmologists are medical doctors with a specialization in the functioning of the eye and eye diseases. They can diagnose eye conditions and perform eye surgery.

Optometrists are not medical doctors. They are eye care professionals that specialize in diagnosis and management of eye conditions that do not require surgery.

If you're diagnosed with an eye condition, ask for a referral to a low vision specialist—an ophthalmologist or (more often) an optometrist who can help you make the best use of your remaining vision. Your current eye care professional may already be a low vision specialist; if not, he or she can refer you to one for a low vision exam. You can also search the AFB Directory of Services for a low vision specialist in your area.
