The first step for individuals entering Alphapointe is an evaluation of their current skill levels. The referring agency provides Alphapointe with medical and visual disability reports. All Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services are administered by professionally certified and licensed staff. An evaluation meeting is led by the client during the last week of testing and includes the instructors and the referral source. A written report detailing the outcomes and any recommendations for training is provided to the referring agency. Testing instruments address the following areas:
Counseling Services
Counseling services are provided by a nationally certified counselor to assist clients to make a transition to acceptance of their disability. This transition also assists in increasing self esteem, professional confidence and the ability to self advocate.
Teaching Services
Activities of Daily Living (ADL) are provided by an Occupational Therapist and focus on preparing the client to assume responsibility for meeting their own needs. The curriculum covers personal hygiene, practical daily skills and community integration. As a part of ADL, clients are introduced to a variety of aids and appliances that could enhance their efficiency and independence.
Communication Skills
Training addresses alternative techniques and adaptive aids for written communication, access techniques and resources, and traditional academic review. Braille instruction is targeted toward the goal of providing clients with an alternative to print for daily use at home and workplace.
Orientation and Mobility Services O&M services are provided as part of the Rehabilitation Services or as a stand-alone service. Current O&M abilities are observed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings and training is provided sequentially: traveling with a sighted guide, white cane techniques, and use of public transportation.
Technology Instruction
Evaluation and training can be provided as a single service on site at Alphapointe, a worksite or a client’s home. Emphasis is placed on the use of computer technology typically found in the workplace. Internet and e-mail access is taught as are essential commands of the access device of choice. Clients are exposed to a range of voice synthesizers, screen reading and magnification programs.
Vocational Services The vocational services offered in Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program include job search assistance, resume and cover letter writing, job interviewing skills, teamwork skills development, workplace protocol and direct job placement. All of these can be offered as a single service to any client based on the evaluation process.
