Review Autism Spectrum Disorders and Visual Impairment

Editorial Review:

Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness - Reviewed by Carol Seckington
Within the covers of this book is a wealth of knowledge and strategies that have been tested in the classroom. Since no one student with an autism spectrum disorder and visual impairment is the same as another, and no single strategy will work across the board with all students in this population, these techniques will serve to stimulate ideas for teachers in need of instructional techniques for students with visual impairment and autism spectrum disorder. Autism Spectrum Disorders and Visual Impairment is a book I wish I had years ago when I was a less experienced teacher. I would recommend this book to parents, beginning educators, and therapists who want to gain practical knowledge of how to attend to the unique needs of this population. I would also recommend this book for professionals to use as a resource for guiding students with autism spectrum disorder and visual impairment in achieving their fullest potential. This book is a must-have for any and all professionals seeking knowledge or who are currently working with students who have visual impairment and autism spectrum disorders.
RE:view Fall 2005-Reviewed by Karen Nagle, Mohawk College
I cannot stress enough how impressed I am with this book. I particularly appreciate Gense and Gense's viewpoint on the power of observational skills in determining and understanding behaviors that are exhibited by individuals with ASDVI and the wide array of strategies that they offered for our use. There is a reason for every behavior; as educators, we have the responsibility to discover the reasons and plan accordingly. This book will now be required reading for our college students in the Sensory Loss Techniques Certificate Program. Thank you! In the vernacular of movie reviewers, I give this book a 2 "thumbs up", 5-star rating. Because it is so comprehensive and carefully explained, it is well suited and a "must-see" for all audiences.
