Description of JVIB November-December 2017, Vol. 111, No. 6

With guest editor Jane N. Erin, Ph.D., professor emerita, College of Education, University of Arizona, and editor emerita, JVIB, this special issue features a lead article that "address[es] the collaboration of physical therapists with orientation and mobility specialists, highlighting the importance of integrated service delivery," according to Dr. Erin's editorial. Another article demonstrates the utility of the system of least prompts in teaching personal hygiene skills to a teenager with autism spectrum disorder and multiple disabilities. Other articles address training and resource needs in early intervention, Unified English Braille implementation, personnel preparation in the United States and the United Kingdom. The practice area explores teaching in a modern era, describes a unique application of assistive technology, seeks to redefine the roles of vision professionals in education and rehabilitation, and provides techniques for rehabilitation with individuals who have implanted retinal prostheses.

The issue features two Comments, one of which discusses "the two fundamental truths to consider when partnering with [the] parents and families" of children with visual impairments and stresses "the importance of establishing, nurturing, and sustaining authentic partnerships with families." The second suggests solutions to meet workforce needs in the field of visual impairment. In addition, learn what Western Michigan University's Robert Wall Emerson thought of the second edition of Orientation and Mobility Techniques: A Guide for the Practitioner, in this issue's Book Review.

In addition to research, practice, and commentary, this issue of JVIB also includes two CE opportunities for individuals needing to recertify with the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP).
