Description of Teaching the Beginning Reader
A three-step approach to teaching braille reading is described that has been used successfully with mainstreamed students and with children who have additional disabilities. It includes suggestions for teaching skills within a meaningful context, as well as for using materials from the meaning-oriented end of the language arts continuum. Special considerations related to mastering the braille code and reading mechanics are discussed in the second half of the chapter.
