Description of Self-Determination
The self-determination area of the ECC concentrates on the skills that enable a student to advocate effectively for their needs and goals. This area is especially critical for students with visual impairments because they are not exposed to the same incidental observation of available choices as their sighted peers. This chapter focuses on empowering students through knowledge, self-awareness, decision-making, assertiveness, and self-advocacy and emphasizes the techniques teachers can use to assist students in developing those skills. Learning activities are supplied at the end of the chapter.
