Description of Functional Vision Assessment and Early Intervention Practices
This chapter focuses on the functional vision assessment and related intervention strategies for infants and young children with visual and additional disabilities. The characteristics of cortical visual impairment (CVI) are discussed, along with considerations for the functional vision assessment and appropriate interventions for children diagnosed with CVI and multiple disabilities. The section on assessment considerations emphasizes the family's role in identifying the extent to which a young child uses vision to learn about the surrounding environment. The final section identifies how results of the clinical examination and functional vision assessment are used to develop specific interventions and adaptations that promote a child's use of vision within the social context of interactions and everyday routines, as well as environmental adaptations that foster the effective use of vision.
