Description of Webinar on Lighting and the Visually Impaired with Special Emphasis on LED Lighting
This webinar reviews the need for increased illumination by most persons with a visual impairment, compared to that of persons with no vision loss, for tasks such as reading. The need for increased illumination as we get older, especially for near tasks such as reading, will also be discussed. Various options for lighting will be summarized, including incandescent, halogen, fluorescent, full spectrum (“daylight”), and LED, along with some of the advantages and disadvantages of each. LED lighting will receive special emphasis in this presentation, particularly featuring its characteristics, benefits, strengths, and weaknesses. Finally, the critical role of positioning of lighting in regards to the target task and the user will be explored.
