Description of iPad in the Classroom Webinar Series
This series of three webinars features the presenter Dr. Betsy Flener who will present a rationale and specific suggestions for using the iPad and tablet devices in the classroom for students with visual and multiple disabilities. The cost of the series is $119; individual webinars are $49 each if purchased separately.
Creating Tactile Overlays for the iPad and Tablet Devices
This first presentation by Dr. Betsy Flener is geared for teachers, consultants, assistive technology specialists, and parents and all those who serve various levels of students with visual impairments including those with additional disabilities. The presentation will first provide a rationale for making tactile overlays for the iPad and tablet devices. The presentation will also describe factors in the conductivity of the iPad and the inexpensive “toolkit” to be assembled in making tactile overlays. Dr. Flener will describe features of applications to be selected for overlays including 5 different examples. The presentation will conclude with examples and descriptions of various iPad accessories.
iPad and Communication for Students with Visual and Multiple Disabilities
The second webinar presented by Dr. Betsy Flener provides information to those working to develop systems of communication for students with visual and multiple disabilities including students with cortical visual impairment, cerebral palsy, autism, and deaf-blindness. The webinar describes basic communication functions, symbols, and assessing students with complex needs. An explanation of how tactile symbols can be used with the iPad including features and suggested applications is given. Additional considerations and applications for low vision students are discussed along with important iPad accessories. The webinar is appropriate for speech/language pathologists, teachers of the visually impaired, occupational therapists, parents, and assistive technology consultants.
Reinforcing Braille Literacy Using the iPad
The final webinar in the series is geared to teachers of the visually impaired, braille reading specialists, consultants, parents and those who provide direction instruction to pre-braille and academic students using braille. This presentation will provide a rationale regarding the importance of using tactile input with the iPad. Participants will be provided information on the features of applications conducive for creating fun pre-braille and braille activities including using tactile overlays. Various examples of activities will be presented including pre-braille activities and the ability to customize braille identification, phonics, and spelling activities using specific applications with the iPad with tactile reinforcement.
