Description of Practice Perspectives: Designing for People with Visual Impairments

In a recent upgrade to its facilities, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary sought to include an ophthalmology clinic at its satellite location in Boston's Longwood Medical Area. The hospital engaged architectural firm Tsoi/Kobus & Associates in 2011 to design the facility according to patients' needs. What the firm learned during the process of designing the facility allowed not only for better understanding of the needs of people with visual impairments, but also helped in the development of universal design principles—architectural practices intended to make buildings and products usable by all, regardless of age, ability or status—that can be used for future projects.
