Description of Teaching Social Skills Chapter 12 - Teaching Social Skills to Adolescents and Young Adults with Visual Impairments
This chapter deals with age-specific content, focusing on secondary and postsecondary students. It addresses ways of building relationships, social integration, self-concept, and self-esteem, with an overview of pertinent research and practical suggestions based on the research discussed. It also presents information specific to three themes of particular concern with this age group: understanding how one looks in comparison to others and maintaining an attractive personal appearance; coping with the inability to drive; and learning to flirt and date in hope of developing positive, intimate relationships. Specific strategies described and intervention techniques for this age group are offered.
