Description of Growth and Development of Young Children - Volume 1, Chapter 4 Foundations of Education
The foundations of early childhood education, its effectiveness, and theories of child development are explored. Among the topics covered are legislation; delivery of services; facilitated learning; and developmentally appropriate practice for children with visual impairments. The author deals with the nature of visual disorders; the impact of visual impairment on the ability to move about freely and control the environment and the self in relation to it; the further impact of additional disabilities on early development; and the need for families and educators to avoid developmental milestones that list various skills by age level in favor of more process-oriented approaches to understanding development. A chronology of federal legislation and programs affecting early childhood education is included.
