Each year, approximately 400,000 babies are born prematurely in the United States. Little information exists to help parents deal with the challenges of having an infant with many medical needs and the resulting stresses they encounter. Small Victories offers a selection of interviews with individuals who were born prematurely and with parents of children who were born prematurely who discuss the many issues they faced. The book contains a detailed resource guide that provides suggestions for parents of premature babies as well as information on support for families.

Editorial Reviews:
"In each interview, adult preemies provide advice to parents today, which many will find very useful. Several themes occur throughout the book of interest to preemie adults. One is that parents are advised to treat their children as normally as possible, encouraging them to participate in society and not to be overly protective. Over and over the refrain seems to be, "I was able to do this because my parents believed in me." The importance of peers--for preemies as well as their parents--was another oft mentioned refrain; role models were very appreciated. Lastly the importance of actively advocating for your child (or older children, advocates for themselves) is demonstrated throughout the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in what may happen as children born prematurely grow up. It is a unique book that deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the life time effects of prematurity."
