This combined October-November special issue of JVIB on the theme of literacy offers readers their first glimpse at the published findings of the Alphabetic Braille and Contracted Braille Study (ABC Braille Study). Because of the exceptional number of articles accepted for this issue, the editors of JVIB, in collaboration with guest editors M. Cay Holbrook, University of British Columbia, and Carol Farrenkopf, Vision Program of the Toronto District School Board, chose to offer readers a combined special issue for the months of October and November that is almost double the length of a usual special issue. The lead article, by D'Andrea, provides readers with background about the instructional methods for teaching uncontracted and contracted braille. Two articles by Wall Emerson and colleagues explore high and low levels of literacy achievement and acquisition of literacy skills by young children who are blind. Other topics investigated in this month's combined issue include tactile graphics, hand movements, spelling, the effect of social experiences on literacy, emergent literacy of young children, and alternative methods of braille transcription.
