Abstract: The author gives an overview of societies’ historical responses, to blindness and to persons who are blind or visually impaired, from antiquity to modern times. She discusses folk beliefs, early medical approaches, and some controversial modern experiments. World War I had a momentous effect on public consciousness of blindness and visual impairment as America and the world entered the 1920s.
