The Impact of Early Exposure to Uncontracted Braille Reading on Students with Visual Impairments—Sunggye Hong and Jane N. Erin, print edition page(s) 325

Abstract: This study compared the reading and spelling skills of students who were taught to read using uncontracted braille versus those who were taught to read using contracted braille. It found no descriptive differences between initial instruction in the two types of braille.

Abstract: This study found that between 2000 and 2002, the percentage of students with visual impairments in the general student population of Texas was close to a previously quoted figure of 0.15%. In addition, the percentage of students with visual impairments who were identified as totally blind was found to be 4%-5% higher than the previous estimate of 20%. There was some indication that the prevalence or reporting of visual impairment in school-age children was different across different ethnic groups.


Effects of Visual Impairment, Gender, and Age on Self-determination —Barbara L. Robinson and Lauren J. Lieberman, print edition page(s) 351

Abstract: This survey of 54 students with visual impairments (aged 8-23 years) who participated in a one-week summer sports camp examined the opportunities they were given for self-determination at home, at school, with friends, for health care, and in physical education classes. The participants at all levels of visual impairment scored low in self-determination across all the domains, which indicates that they were given few opportunities for self-determined behaviors.
