Audio Description

The Language System of Audio Description: An Investigation as a Discursive Process—Philip J. Piety, print edition page(s) 453

Abstract: This study investigated the language used in a selection of films containing audio description and developed a set of definitions that allow productions containing it to be more fully defined, measured, and compared. It also highlights some challenging questions related to audio description as a discursive practice and provides a basis for future study of this unique use of language.

Abstract: A multiple baseline design across behaviors was used with two visually impaired girls to establish the effectiveness of self-evaluation and the role of feedback. In both cases, self-evaluation was effective in increasing the girls' social skills and social interaction. Implications of the role of significant others in providing feedback are discussed.

Preparation in and Use of the Nemeth Braille Code for Mathematics by Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments—L. Penny Rosenblum and Sheila Amato, print edition page(s) 484

Abstract: This study examined the preparation in and use of the Nemeth braille code by 135 teachers of students with visual impairments. Almost all the teachers had taken at least one course in the Nemeth code as part of their university preparation. In their current jobs, they prepared a variety of materials, primarily basic operations, word problems, tactile graphics, and fractions.

The Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB) invites submissions for a special theme issue on orientation and mobility (O&M). Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Application of distance education to O&M preparation
  • Traditional O&M programs and the discovery learning approach
  • Strategies for increasing O&M personnel

  • Use of warning tiles, tactile surfaces, and other environmental modifications

  • Working with students who have multiple disabilities
  • Eligibility for paratransit services
  • Medicare's relationship to O&M
  • The practice of blindfolding people with low vision during O&M instruction

  • Comparison of the two certification approaches
