Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

Braille, should I learn or not? Please give your input or experience, thank you!

I am just wondering if I should try learning Braille now? My vision is bad 20/200 and 20/400 - that's the best they can do and my doctors believe it may get worse over time. I have been connected with the local Center for sight and they are also connecting me to the States' Commission for the Blind and Visually Handicapped. So I am wondering if I should go ahead and talk to someone now about possibly learning Braille. Please give your opinion as to whether or not I could benefit from learning braille. Thank you.

Well, I am primarily a print reader but also know braille. Either way, it is a good skill to have.

I also agree with those who have posted ahead of me. As a teacher, I share with families and students...I believe the ability to use both print and braille allows you to have options, greater control. Regards

I agree with the two posters.

If your power was to go out, and you was in the mood to read, at least you would have a back up if you decide to learn how to read braille.

Good luck to you.

I think that you definitely should go ahead and learn braille. Even when I had low vision when I was little, my parents told my school district that I was to go ahead and learn braille and to be honest I feel that that decision has helped me to succeed more in school and in every other aspect of my future life. Good luck with whatever you dcide.

I would say it's definitely worth learning -- because at the very least you will have two ways of reading if you learn, and you may even find that you find reading Braille easier/more comfortable.
