Do blind women wear make-up?

I'm writing a TV script centred around a blind woman. I was wondering if she might wear make-up - and if it would be possible to apply it herself? Are there any particular methods that could be used to apply make-up without sight - or is it just a question of practice?
Thanks.

Re:Do blind women wear make-up?

I'm legally blind and occassionally bump into stuff lol. I can do everything make up wise besides anything involving my eyes. The issue is I rarely notice a different so I only use it when on camera.

As Corporate Care Specialist with my company, we work with Blind In Business, a London based charity, and I help organise workshop days in which we help visually impaired female graduates with their hair, make up and business attire to give them confidence when they go to interviews. The girls we meet often try to wear make up but have little confidence when applying it. The beauty team at Aveda in West London provided invaluable help by showing the girls how to apply their make up - eyeshadow, foundation, blusher, mascara, lipstick - the works, and they instantly felt better about themselves. Not every girl is lucky enough to have a mum, sister or friend who can offer stylish advice. We enlisted sighted girls to write down the colours and instructions about make up and clothes so that each visually impaired girl could take their personal colour chart to a shop so that the assistant could find the colours that suited them. Out of the 6 VI girls that we helped, 4 have found exciting and meaningful work from their subsequent interviews. Confidence is everything. Imagine leaving the house for an important interview or meeting, getting dressed in the dark and not looking in the mirror before you leave the house. How do you feel? Welcome to their world.

I would like to offer our help, for women who are blind or partially blind. Mineral Me Too is a mineral make up company that has a product called "On the Go" brush. It comes with the mineral make up already in the brush and is dispensed evenly without the "swirl, tap, buff" method. We offer foundations, cheek colors, correctors, bronzers and mineral veil in them. They come marked with a series of dots that indicate what stage of the applicaton this brush would be used for. For instance the primer would have one dot, as it would be the first in the application process, the foundation brush would have two... etc. We have had great success with this and are thrilled to be the only mineral make up company, to offer this to women. You can find them at www.mineralmetoo.com

I wear makeup to important events like dates, band/orchestra concerts (I'm in the band/orchestra), conventions and other big things. But around the house, to the mall, out to Starbucks, school...it just isn't worth the hassle. It takes me a little longer than my twin sister, who is sighted, but as long as I know exactly what I'm putting on and there are no disctractions I can put on makeup successfully in about five to ten minutes.

Can we read your script?? I'm very interested to read what you came up with!

Re:Do blind women wear make-up?

Hi, I'm past legally blind and don't bump into things (much) because I've wedded to my cane. I think most of us wear make-up to some degree, but it does take a while to get it right. Around the eyes is a real problem since on top of everything else I'm extremely myopic but I have a myodisc on a stick that I hold in front of one eye while I do the other. I'm teaching my 12 year old the same technique -- both my girls are also extremely nearsighted and wear glasses with double digit Rxs.
I have a friend who's totlly blind, she generally only does the easy snuff like lipstick.

Re:Do blind women wear make-up?

My girlfriend does and she's legally blind. it takes her forever though...

Have you finished the script? Can I read it?

Re:Do blind women wear make-up?

I am not completely blind but legally blind so I have enough vision not to bump into things, etc. Even so, applying makeup is so precise, it does make it difficult to apply eye makeup. Applying foundation and blush and lipstick is easier and takes a ligher hand since you may not catch a too-heavy application. I think most women, from time-to-time apply these things withoug looking anyway.

I am interested in the fact that you are apparently writing a realistic script of a blind woman rather than someone with a cane and/or dog. Many of us who have partial vision function fairly normally without it being obvious to observers. Good luck with your script.

Yes, we do wear makup, it takes time to get the application right, but with time and patience we can wear make-up just like everyone else does..
