Re:HELP Please To Cane or Not to Cane

That's the spirit! I was just like you a year ago. I was a college senior, in my last year and hadn't been off-campus much, either alone or with other people because of my fear. My parents and other family members didn't quite understand my plight so I went behind their backs and got a cane and training done on campus with an instructor from my state agency for the blind and visually impaired. She also helped me talk with my family and explain my problems to them. They had no idea how big of an issue mobility had been for me. Since then, they have seen me use my cane and all that it has done for my confidence. They also spoke with my other family members and explained it to them so they wouldn't be shocked when I showed up to family gatherings using a cane. My world is so much bigger and so much brighter than it's ever been and I am grateful to my O&M instructor; I call her my angel because she came into my life at a time when I was very vulnerable and gave me the strength and the courage to do what I should have done a long time ago. I am glad to hear that you are using the cane and the instruction, regardless of what your family thinks. It's your life and if the cane and training help, then it is necessary and they should be able to look past it and see what it has done for you. Keep us posted and if you have any questions, please let me know (emara996@gmail.com).

Hey! I couldn't agree more with Lori -- get a cane and learn how to use it. I spent years without one and finally got one when I went o college. Six months later, I told my parents I don't know how I managed without it. Now I'm married and two of our kids have my problem; we got them canes and training almost before they could walk and they are both doing great in school with tons of friends.
It really helped me and even more my girls.

Re:HELP Please To Cane or Not to Cane

Definitely use your cane, and get very, very good with it. My mom was embarrassed and afraid of how it would "look", so seldom used hers. One day she had to walk a couple of blocks alone, tripped over a curb because she was sweeping her cane too high, hit her head, and died a few days later. People are happy to have an opportunity to help the blind, and the days when the blind were ridiculed are long gone. You're only as restricted as you let yourself be. Get out there and make the most of your life!

Re:HELP Please To Cane or Not to Cane

I was very hesitant to use my free nfb cane at first, but curbs and even worse uneven sidewalks finally got to me

I didn't want to be "the blind guy", but, I am :) so I got over my initial apprehensions and use my cane every time I leave my house

it really gives a heads up to others when crossing streets, and the help at stores (which before was nonexistent) is great

you could have the best of both worlds with as collapsible cane like:

Just keep in coat or pocket till needed.....

Re:HELP Please To Cane or Not to Cane

double vision is like okay you got the solid object and you sort of have a shadow of it only its the same color and it looks solid and like with doorways it sometimes makes makes them seem wider or skinnier because i can't tell which ones the real one i tend to bump into the doorways

Re:HELP Please To Cane or Not to Cane

What is it like with double vision? I think it's better born blind because you have nothing to miss.

Re:HELP Please To Cane or Not to Cane

Get a cane!!! And get some good training with it! It makes a big diference. Not only does it help you from tripping and running into things it helps the people with you not to have you hanging on them and watching out for you so much. It also gets people out of your way!
