How to describe color to a blind person?

I was watching a show on the Science Channel about Synesthesia (The confusion of senses). On the show they had a man who was blind and when told a certain word he would see a flash of color.

My question is how does a blind person understand color?

I know you can talk about color through emotion or describe it like red is the color of a stop sign. How does he know that the "red" he sees is what is normally refered to as red and not acctually a blue.

One portion has been cleared up...the man on the show was not born blind. Nevermind about the question guys.
