Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

I am 35 now and was born with a cataract.Please help.

I was born with a cataract and now I am 35 and want to get it removed. I spoke with an eye doctor back in my early twenties and was told that even if I had it removed I would still not be able to see right. He told me, because I was born with it and waited so long that my eye is basically dead. Is this true? Has anyone ever had a successfully cataract surgery that was born with one? Does age really matter? Please help me. : (

I was born with cataracts in both eyes....my school nurse caught it at a school eye exam when i was in the 3rd grade. I have had both lens' removed and both eyes now have lens implants. All surgeries before i was 18. My vision is getting worse. I would think waiting would not be such an issue, but then again, having the surgery for me had paid off for many years....but now I'm scared that my vision will deteriate quickly.
I had an excellent doctor in Pomona,CA....i was his 1st case.

Hi ALJ74;
Do you still have an eye doctor? or have you not seen a doctor at all. Do you know what your eye doctor said to your parents about your cataract when you were born? This info might help you get an answer of what to do. If you go to an eye doctor maybe he can see how it is progressing.
I was born with one cataract in each eye. The doctor told my mom it was inoperable; I'd have to live with it. It did not bother me. I didn't know it was there. I had other eye conditions that had me legally blind.
When I was 34 both cataracts ripened and clouded my vision. I had them removed 10 months apart.
The doctors did a test to see if there was vision behind the cataract; and there was vision.
I am still legally blind. They could not put a lens implant in my eyes because of some pre existing eye problems. I do have to wear glasses. Without the cataracts colors are a lot brighter. I did develope glaucoma in each eye as a result from the surgeries. It can happen.
Get medical help about it. You did not state whether you did. Lots of luck to you.

I am 21 now and I was born with a cataract. They removed it when I was about 5 months old. It was connected to my lens so they removed that as well. Now I where contacts everyday but still not able to see. If i want to use that eye i have to close my other one. My vision is 20/800... and that eye is lazy and tends to go toward my nose.

Wow, I am 48, and just lost my sight due to this.. it went so fast, when it firss started, I DID run to the E.R., only to be told they could do nothing... then I went to Loma Linda Eye Institute, who told me if I had come in earlier, they might have saved my sight...I guess at times there is some things that can be done, but only if caught right away!

I've looked for the same type of answers. I'm 22, and unfortunately, the answer is still the same. There is nothing that can be done to solve the problem. Maybe in the future they will figure something out, but as of now. I don't know of anything. I have the same problem though. Keep your head up! God Bless.
