PLEASE HELP! HUSBAND RECENTLY GONE BLIND...NEED REFERENCES/RESOURCES

my husband has recently gone blind and I need help. I know there are a lot resources for the blind but I dont have a clue where to start. This is very upsetting to the both of us. We are young (24 and 21) and just started our lives. We need help and as much as we can get.

Look for any resources that may be available from your state. My husband has received support from the SC Commission for the Blind with resources for helping him deal with low vision and continuing working. I don't know if it will work, but try.

Re:PLEASE HELP! HUSBAND RECENTLY GONE BLIND...NEED REFERENCES/RESOURCES

Your story just broke my heart. I want to be there for you, I know how devistated I would be if I were in any sort of loose like yours. I am currenlty a surgical nurse at an eye center and my surgeon seems hopeful and optomistic about situations similar to yours. I would like to share your story with him and see maybe what we can do to help. We have changed many lives at our center and hopefully we can help in your situation. e-mail me with a little more information and we will see what we can do.

The above information is excellent! I might add to contact two Federal and state funded agencies that really can help with resources, training, and financial assistance. First contact the Department of Rehabilitation in your state. (Ask for Blind Services). Also contact Social Security Administration for he might be eligible for Disability Benefits. As scary as things might feel, a lot of resources are available to assist you and your husband.
Feel free to e-mail me for further information.
Hang in there,

Ditto! These people have given you some great places to start looking. I would like to mention that I lost my vision at the age of 24 (14 years ago). A division of DHS Dept. of Human Services) here in OK called Visually Services is were I started. I'm not sure if my opthomolgist contacted them or if it was my mother but they trained me to use a cain, gave me several magnifiers and other tools for household use. They worked closely with our local Junior College which has the best disabled student services in the state! It was rough but it made me a stronger person. I married a beautiful woman about 4 years after becoming VI and we know have an 8 year old son! I'd be lying if I told you I didn't miss driving and the other things but, all in all, life is great!

Resources Galore...

Hi, Yes, there are plenty of resources, and plenty of people, younger and older than you and your hubbie, that are in the same boaat, and you CAN talk iwth them via e-mail discussion lists, at least. First, go to www.nfb.org and search their massive amount of relevant resources online, from aids and appliances, to literature, to contact info. The National Federation of the Blind, NFB, also has 15 or 20 differente lists you can sub to covering various aspects of the world of blindness. Go to www.nfbnet.org for those lists. Other resources are... various lists regarding aspects of blindness at both YahooGroups.com and Topica.com. Sporting resources to start iwth are www.usaba.org, which is the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes. There is also a site called USA Goalball, currently at www.angelfire.com/hi5/usa-goalball. Also, try www.nbba.org if you and he like playing softball. Beep Baseball is softball with a twist. *smile* Well, that's a start, for now. If you have any questions, you can always contact me personally at EverettG@stellarmerchandisers.com.

Good luck and God bless you and your husband.

Sincerely, Everett Gavel

I can't really help on the resources side. But I do understand somewhat what you are both going through.I just met my husband of three months almost four years ago.He went blind due to a car accident ten years ago this month. He was 21.If you need some moral support please feel free to write. My husband is very outgoing and positive on life .Perhaps he could talk to your husband.

Re:PLEASE HELP! HUSBAND RECENTLY GONE BLIND...NEED REFERENCES/RESOURCES

I would add the obvious- to check with the local Blindness and Visual Services - or whatever it's called in your area. There are great mobility training programs, computer training programs and vocational training etc. There are libraries for the blind in every state that have magazines and books on tape- check with the library. My husband has been losing his usable vision and we have started tandem biking and hiking on the trails to rails trails.
Hope that adds something.

Re:PLEASE HELP! HUSBAND RECENTLY GONE BLIND...NEED REFERENCES/RESOURCES

April, like you said there is a very long list of resources to help.
You might want to encourage him to check out www.hotbraille.com, which has a tutorial, and forums area where many different aspects of blindness are discussed. Some of the members are sighted as well as blind. They have a service where you can send letters in braille by mail. I recently received one from a friend of mine- but it took about two weeks to arrive.
There http://hadley-school.org
There are free services for the blind and their families to learn braille.
If you have a computer, your husband could probably use the jaws program, which is a screen reading program, and you can download a demonstration from:
http://www.freedomscientific.com
If you have other questions, or need other resources information and have access to the internet, I recommend
http://www.ask.com
Jeeves is such a gentleman, and will assist you anyway he can.
Good luck to you both.
Becky
