Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

Researching a novel

One of the characters in my work-in-progress novel is a very hip 88-year old, black, female scientist in Albany, GA. She is rapidly loosing her sight and has the latest technology but I'm at a loss as to what that would be exactly. So far I've heard of Talking Desktop and Jaws. Is anyone willing to help me out with details so that my narrative/dialog rings true? Title of book is Peach Seed Monkey. Press On!

Thanks for the reply with so many details. Certainly not my goal to have this character be funny and unrealistic, hence my reason for reaching out, so I really appreciate any and all sincere help. You've been very generous.

Re:Researching a novel

wow, that kind of seems unrealistic and funny, and weird and all that sort of crap but okay, if you insist. haha! well, there's
pick one or two
jaws
system access
nvda
window eyes
dolphin
thunderbird

these are stand alones so either use those or these, well she can have to computers
the mac comes with voice over
and I think lynix users use orca

also here's a few cool devices, and unless she's really rich too she might only have one.
braille plus
braille sense
braillelight
braillenote
voicenote
packmate

also pick one, I don't think you could have both on your desktop
open book
kurzweil

also, for low vision there's always magnifiers such as

zoom text
magic

for day to day use there are:
Dots
dimo labeler
metal tag for clothes
label tape with the perkins
braille paper
daisy player
the wave

some people also use things as ordinary as tape, stickers, sequences, beads, and different stuff for labeling.
