Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

3month old son just dx'd with ONH

Hi I just found put my son has ONH affects his right eye. He has seen an eye specialist but all he said was do everything the same and wait 6 months to bring him back. I noticed his peripheral vision is affected on his right side. He's just learning to grab at things but misses more when its on his right side. This is my 3rd child so I know some of these things are hard to determine at this age but I know there are some delays. I feel anxious just waiting 6 months. Is there anything I can do to help him in the meantime? Is there activities I can do? I read this affects his hand eye coordination. So shouldn't I be doing something different with him since this is the stage where that develops? Thank you for reading. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 3month old son just dx'd with ONH

That is a great question, I'm not sure what state you live in but in Indiana, children from birth to 3 years old can receive services (physical therapy, occupational therapy, developmental therapy). They will do an evaluation and determine what type of services will be most beneficial.

My son has bilateral ONH with strabismus and nystagmus. He is now 16 and has received low vision services within our school system and has done very well.

If you have any other questions, I would be happy to give support. I know how devastating it is to find out the diagnosis but your on the right track to give him all the options available to make him as functional as possible.

Take care
