How you can tell if newborn is blind?

How can I tell if my one month old son is blind? Is it too early too tell. He does not flinch or closes his eyes when I act like I am going to poke it out. He does not track objects, fingers or faces. He just spaces out. He was born one week early. Should I be alarmed that he is blind. It says at 1-2 mos he should start tracking objects. Do we have to wait a few months or should they start doing it immediately after birth? We are worried parients. Everything about him seems normal.

It's quite difficult to tell if a baby is blind because they can't tell you. My daughter was born with cataracts in both eyes (genetic) and in her pupils there looked to be a starburst of grey/white. A test for this was to take a picture with a flash and see if there is a red reflex or red eye appearance. This is just for this however. I would try to find the nearest doctor who specializes in this get her checked, with vision issues earlier intervention is the best and the longer you wait the possibility of less vision as she grows decreases. There are several reasons she may not be tracking yet, please get her checked. You can e-mail me if you'd like jraclaw@wi.rr.com

I have notice the same things that the previous parents notice. Take whoever is your child to a eye doctor immediately. It is the best thing to know for sure but most likely he or she is blind. I just found out today that it is a possibility that my new born son is blind. Needless to say, I am in shock!! I do not know what to do. I feel angry, sad, and lost. I never thought that this would happen to my son. I love with all of my heart with all things moving forward. I pray for you(parents) that are going through this it seems to be a long road ahead. It feels that only God can help at this point. thank you for your comments

Re:How you can tell if newborn is blind?

Go to a Pediatric Opthalmologist as some of the others suggested. We had the same thing with our son around 3 or 3 1/2 months so we mentioned it to his Pediatrician at his 4 month visit and he noticed the same thing and gave us a referral to the Opthalmologist. To make a long story short our son is legally blind. We found out after seeing the Opthalmologist and then a Retina Specialist. So we knew for sure by 4 1/2 months. If something is wrong you want to get signed up for Early Intervention as fast as possible so that your child can start to receive the services needed to help them. And you will also need to start educating yourself in order to better help your child also.

Wouldnt the doctor tell you when the baby is born?

Re:How you can tell if newborn is blind?

I noticed the same thing with my son. When I took him into the doctor for his shots around two or three months I said that he wasnt focusing on anything and they checked his eyes and he didn't move. So they referred me to the childrens hospital for a specialist. Thats when we found out and ever since then had therapist for him to get him on track. its harder the longer you wait. Good luck!

I noticed my daughter emily was a very quiet baby and was not doing all the things that babies were doing and I found out when I took her in for a check up and her pupils were dialated. So her pediatrition had me take her in for a cat scan. Now that I had another baby her points out a lot of things that were different with Emily. Basically babies with a vision impairment a delayed and it is very noticable

You can take your baby into a pediatric ophthalmologist if you think something is wrong. I wouldn't wait. Ask your pediatrician for a referral, but don't let the pediatrician talk you into waiting. If you think somethings wrong then go in. Good luck.

The doctors shined a light into Reece's eyes at her 3 month visit and saw that her eyes did not diolate. We didn't find out for sure until she was 8 months old. It's hard when they are new borns.
