keeping glasses on a 21 month old

My son is 21months old and has been diagnosed with ONH since about 5 months old. During our several trips to the eye specialist (3 hours away) we have discovered that he is very near sighted as well. I know that his glasses would help him see better if we could just get him to wear them for more than 30 seconds. Any advise would be appreciated.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

Our 2 year old now keeps his glasses on but we had to go through a lot of glasses to get to this stage!

You just have to persevere, and keep putting them back on.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

my son has been wearing rec specs(www.libertysports.com) since he was 2 yrs. old. they can be fitted for prescription lenses. try putting on a pair of glasses on his favorite teddy bear or wear a pair yourself so he/she can see it is ok for other "important" people to use them. while watching tv, point out when you see other people/kids wearing them.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

P.S. This is Dorothy again.

Another idea might that might work is put them on with the croakies when he is sleeping and when he awakes he might not realize that he has them on and won't take them off immediately.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

My son has worn glasses since he was 6 months old. his first pair were made of flexible plastic frames and since he has such a small bridge on his nose they wouldn't stay up. So we purchased the elastic bands called Croakies which went around the back of the head and they stayed on quite along time during the day. Since he's 5 now, he wears them all day to pre-school with the shoestring type croakies and takes them off when he gets home. you can find Croakies near sunglass wracks at the retail stores or as your optomotrist for them. If you start early when they are young they get used to wearing them sooner.
Hope it helps
Dorothy

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

I know this isn't the best advice, but with my son he was was 2yo when he started wearing his glasses and then a couple months later started patching. The best thing is have lots of activities set up and then as soon as you put the glasses on just overwhelm him for a few minutes with everything so he will be so engrossed he won't notice they are on. That might work for a little while. I know it's hard but keep up the good work. Now my son wears his glasses/patch without any problems. Good luck.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

our granddaughter is almost Three and has ONH and nystagmus the doctors say she is blind but want her to wear Glasses?. We have two pair for her but can not even get close to her wearing them.Although just lately she will let us put sunglasses on her to play. I always tell her when i put my glasses on and she feels them but we will just keep trying. Also they would protect her eyes from injury our Doctor said.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

I been through this with two of my girls, both were born not only with ONA but extreme myopia. (The glasses only help the myopia not the atrophy).
The responser who suggested consistent response and a stock of replacement glasses hit the nail on the head. Believe me it takes a while but by the time my girls were three the first thing they did in the morning was put their glasses on just like Mommy. I may have had it a little easy since neither could or can see almost nothing beyond 6inches or so without them. So there is light at the end of the tunnel so just be patient, as I said it takes a while.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

Hi there,
My daughter is four now and has been wearing glasses since she was a few months old. She needed them as she only has vision in one eye which is corrected by wearing glasses.

We went through many pairs and Repairs in the beginning, but everytime she took them off we just put them back on. If we saw her raise her hands to them we would take her hands and distract her. By being consistent she eventually realised there was just no point in removing them as they would just be put straight back on.

As I say you will need a lot of spare pairs as during toddler hood there were a lot of breakages but as long as we had enough pairs we just kept replacing them everytime.

Good Luck and Best Wishes

Andrea

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

thanks for the info, My son has ONH and nystagmus too but the glasses are only for the near sightedness. We were told the same thing that glasses will not help the ONH or nystagmus. The best I can explain it is that the ONH is like have part of your vision missing (just black). It could be the left side or right side or top or bottom or just black dots throughout the vision field. Do you have VIPS in your area? They are Visually Impaired Pre-schoolers. They have a lot of help and even have workshops that can show you what your grandchild may see like. My son is doing great actually, he is not behind in development at all. I just can't seem to get him to understand that he will see better if he wears his glasses.

Re:keeping glasses on a 21 month old

Hi, I don't know I don't think my grandson would keep them on either he is 2 and was diagnosed with onh and nystigmus but told us glasses would not help? I"m not sure why I have heard some kids getting glasses for this and our dr says they won't help....How is your baby doing?
