Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

My 3 year old was just diagnosed as leagally blind

I'm not sure where to start.... It breaks my heart to know that she's been dealing with this her whole life, and that I didn't even know it.... I'm a single mother of 2 children, I have no idea where to go from here. She receives her glasses in 2 weeks, but are there resources for a child of her age to help her through this? I also need to know how I can learn to help her! I don't have great eyes but hers are significantly worse than mine. I need to learn how to teach her.... Does anyone know where I should start? Thank you

Re: My 3 year old was just diagnosed as leagally blind

I was diagnosed at 2 years old with RP. Back in the early 80's there was not nearly the help there is today. Or at least I assume as much because I didn't get a lot of help in school. I don't think I read a blackboard since maybe the first grade.

Your daughter obviously has decent enough vision for it to not have been obvious. In which case she's going to learn and figure a lot of things out on her own in her own way. You have to remember that if someone is impaired since birth, it's their own normal.

I'd say focus on education. At age 3 school is going to be here before you know it. She'll need to have an IEP in school to make sure she's getting the assessments she needs and the help. And ask for a sheet of the expectations of Kindergarten. What your daughter is going to need is to simply not be behind in education.

And for you, just know that it's not the end of the world for her. As I said, I've been with vision loss for my whole life and it's getting pretty far in the loss now that I'm in my mid-30's. But I still got a good education and am an IT Director at a large company and I love what I do.

In what state are you located?

I was born with low vition, and here's what my mom did. How you teach your daughter will depend on how much vision she has. Try contacting your local school's special education department or special education resource center. If you google "special education resource center and location" you should be able to find one. I would check through your ophthalmologist for resources too. I hope this helps!
