Can a scanner read hand written letters or typed text only?

Is a scanner like the ScannaR able to read hand written letters as well as typed text? If so, does the handwriting have to be print as opposed to cursive?

Well, I wish there is a magic scanner will be able to read hand writing. It will make our life much easier. I do not think it can do so this time. Maybe ten years later even more.

yeah, unless the author of said hand written document has really good hand writing, it is, and will remain impossible to scan hand written letters, but I admit, that would be quite cool if it were so. You are a true romantic
