Expanding possibilities for people with vision loss

Dome magnifiers: Please tell us of your experience.

Leslie Degner said this today about dome magnifiers: "Try this inexpensive vision aid. This reading magnifier easily slides across your favorite newspaper, magazine or book."

Really? How long have you used one? Do they slide easily? Are they preferable to a hand magnifier of the same size? How are they for a lot of reading? Does it make a difference as to being in a chair or at a table?

Really?

How long have you used one?

it was one of the first items I bought, but it was not used very much due to its limitations

Do they slide easily?
as long as the surface is level, yes it slid easy, till it hit the bend of the book, my sole use of the magnifier

Are they preferable to a hand magnifier of the same size?
no not for use in reading books in my case
could not use reading in bed, or on the couch, pretty much had to be seated at a table or using a lap desk if in recliner.
being round and curved had two limitations 1) the roundedness (good word:) had a sweet spot ie; towards the edges the print distorted
2) because it did not work side to side completely it was hard moving the magnifier to the center of the book

How are they for a lot of reading?
bad for my wants of book reading not ata table or desk

Does it make a difference as to being in a chair or at a table?
yes you had to be at a flat surface or the magnifier simply falls off

the one i purchased and most of the ones in catalogues have no handles (they are round after all) so you usually grip near the viewing surface, so skin oils, fingerprints start to smudge/smear the magnifier needs a lot of wiping
