Blind guy looking for........

Hi there!
I'm a 45 year old Blind guy looking for some friends to network with (get a job, socialize, etc). I know it seems like am getting a late start on this (it seems like it to me) but, we all gotta start somewhere.

Frankly, the reason for the late start was this: I went into self-imposed exile about 15 years ago (got burned a few too many times) and i am finally crawling out of my shell (tired of the 'suffer in silence" routine). My primary focus right now is getting meaningful employment. However, I also need a social network (something I don't have much of). it really wasn't until this last week that I realized I was turning into a shut-in. frankly, that life is not for me.

So? how about it? anyone in or around the phoenix area willing to help me get my life back on track?

Re:Blind guy looking for........

good day;
I have taken calls for sprint/nextel out of oregon and loved that job. The software was by default slightly accessible and what it wasn't I developed some scripts for them.
Now, i'm working in montana taking customer service skill calls for bofa, and like that a lot. I would like to share a link with you, a friend shared it with me. The cost of the classes are a bit much at $4200 for a 7 week class, but I think it's good for people looking into cs:

www.statlercenter.org
feel free to check them out.
If you want to email me use my username and add the at sign gmail dot come to the end of it, and you'll get me.
thanks
michael

Just wondering how things are going for you? Hopefully better.

Re:Blind guy looking for........

Hello there, Is rehab an option for you? So what is the best way to communicate with you?

Re:Blind guy looking for........

Yes, they do , but given the current budget crunch, there is a waiting list several months long. I have recently gone from functional large print vision to light sensing sight only. this has slowed my typing down a lot as I am now having to relearn the keyboard 5 finger typing style. This now means I need braille training and additional equipment to be able to compete. All this occurred in the ;ast 2 months asa result of an eye infection.

btw, it tool me over 15 minutes just to type this message in (I have voiceover set to enunciate each keystroke I hit). looks like I need typing training too.

Hi there, Does your State offer computer software training to blind and visuallly impaired individuals? In my State trainers are certified. `This may be something to look in to since with your knowledge in this area, you appear to have much to offer. I am not in your State, but if you like, we could keep in touch.

Re:Blind guy looking for........

hey Eric; I don't want to post the link in here, but will be happy to send it to you. sounds like your skills would fit into a Sys Admin or LAN/WAN support type of position. It is difficult to attain those kinds of positions without a degree/cerification in that field at a company the size of BofA. so if you have those, definitely include them in any resume.
Contact me at my ;e mail; address which is my screen name here, at aol dot com. i will send you a link then.

Re:Blind guy looking for........

marketable skills....
lets see...
Conversant with most X86 based hardware (I assemble machines in my spare time).
I can install just about any flavor of OS on that hardware (windows. linux and OS X) and configure it for just about any setup there is (home, office, etc.). Provisioning peripherals is easy for me (network routers, printers, camera, etc).
I have been told I have a very good telephone voice (albeit a base baritone ) and my communications skills seem reasonable. office packages like microsoft and openoffice are not beyond my abilities. I am also conversant with the security aspects of software (anti-virus, malware removers, etc) and have a basic understanding of data recovery and backups. I've spent the last 16 years trying to keep those skills up to usable levels. if you need a resume, I can provide one on request.

I have never works fraud prevention before. thats sounds interesting. I am pretty good at it from an end-user perspective (I seem to have a talent for spotting scams and tracking them back to their source).

I wouldn't mind,working for B of A.
got a link where I can apply?

- Eric

Re:Blind guy looking for........

sorry. I also wanted to mention Bank of America as an opportunity due to their dedication to the hiring of very diverse populations. All measures of diversity, not just disabilities or cultural differences.
They also have a centralized Accomodation Services department. I assisted with the standardization of workstations for the visually impaired. Everyone uses the same hardware and software depending on visual accuity, and/or braille skills. this is important because most of our applications are home-grown (composed inhouse) and we have Jaws scripting through a hired contractor for on the fly adaptations, and he also works with testing new releases of our applications. similar measures are in place for screen magnification softwares, though i am not as familiar as i am totally blind.
Hope this helps

Re:Blind guy looking for........

hi N7zzt;
What is your background in terms of employable skill sets? Have you put a resume together, or some kind of career development plan? It's much easier to find a job when you determine what parts of your personal profile are marketable, and pick a target. I am not in Phoenix, but i work for Bank of America in IT as a manager.
We have several call centers in Phx ranging from Collections to Fraud Prevention for credit card operations, and a few other areas of interest.
Best of luck
