The American Foundation for the Blind is working with a major design firm to identify challenges in the “built environment” and possible product solutions. The “built environment” refers to cabinetry, flooring, lighting, signage, bathroom fixtures, and other physical attributes of a commercial space.

Who is being recruited?
Individuals who are blind or have low vision, are over the age of 18, and live in the United States are being recruited. We will be working to recruit a diverse group based on geographic location, age, ethnicity, and visual impairment.

What will participants be asked to do?
Participants will be asked online to complete a consent form and demographic form.

If you are selected to participate in a focus group you will then complete a Non-Disclosure/Assignment-Agreement form. Participants will be assigned to a focus group that will meet via Zoom, a web conferencing tool that allows one to connect via a telephone, computer, or mobile device. Focus groups will last 1.5 to 2 hours. There will be 6-10 members in each focus group. Participants are responsible for any costs associated with connecting to the focus group (e.g., long-distance charges).

What will be discussed?
Each participant will attend only one focus group. There are 3 focus group topics. You must meet the criteria below to participate in the focus group on that topic!

  • Topic 1: Participants must be employed in “traditional” workplaces reporting to an office building at least 3 days a week. (We recognize during COVID-19 that participants may be currently working at home.)
  • Topic 2: Participants must have traveled by airplane between January 1 and March 31, 2020, staying in a hotel during the same trip.
  • Topic 3: Between January 1 and March 31, 2020, participants must have visited stores, office buildings, medical offices, and hospitals that they do not routinely visit. They must have visited at least 3 of these types of environments in the timeframe.

Will I be paid to be in the focus group?
This is a voluntary research study. You will not receive payment for your time.
