Dear Friend,
I want to personally thank you for your support of the American Foundation for the Blind. It’s people like you who make our life-changing work possible – and this year we made significant progress toward our goal of creating a world that’s built for everyone.
Too often, people who are blind or have low vision face barriers to employment, education, public transportation, using websites and apps independently, and so much more. We’re working to change that, so everyone has the opportunity to pursue limitless possibilities.
I’m proud to share highlights of some of our meaningful achievements this year:
- Our Public Policy and Research Institute was central to the U.S. Department of Justice announcing a final rule requiring state and local governments to make their websites and mobile applications accessible to people with disabilities, as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
- Our research team released easy-to-understand summaries and fact sheets about our research studies, along with toolkits for improving inclusion in public settings.
- AFB’s research team began a study of artificial intelligence (AI). The goal is to understand both the potential opportunities and risks of this technology for people who are blind or have low vision.
- We launched our Digital Accessibility Internship Program, which cultivates change through education. We’re empowering the next generation of professionals to make sure digital technology is accessible to everyone, regardless of visual ability or a disability. The Internship prepares participants to create inclusive digital environments and help organizations meet their accessibility goals.
- Our consulting team advised Mattel, which recently introduced the first blind Barbie®, giving kids who are blind or low vision a doll that reflects their identity.
- The documentary we co-produced with BeachGlass Films, Possibilities – which celebrates the legacy of Helen Keller through the shared stories of 21st-century voices – won the Best Disability Film award at the Power International Film Festival.
That’s quite a list – and it’s only a sampling of what we’ve achieved this year. Your support has been instrumental in making these achievements possible. Each donation, whether big or small, has contributed to our shared vision of a world where people who are blind or visually impaired can live fully and independently.
As we look forward to the coming year, we are excited about the new initiatives and programs we have planned. However, we cannot continue this journey without your ongoing support. This year-end, we invite you to reaffirm your commitment to our cause by making a special contribution. Your gift will help us build on our successes and reach even more individuals who need our support.
Visual ability should not dictate someone’s access to opportunity. Will you help us create a world that’s built for everyone? Please give a gift that’s meaningful to you.
Thank you again for your generous support.
With gratitude,
