Dear Friend,
For over a century, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) has provided groundbreaking research that informs movements to foster the independence and inclusion of people who are blind or have low vision. Of course, this research could not have been done without the support of people just like yourself. And as AFB’s Chief Public Policy and Research Officer, it’s been an honor to work with such a dynamic team that includes researchers who combine their expertise and lived experience of blindness to produce high quality and impactful research.
Since our founding, AFB has recognized how technology can drive change. In the early days, it was our technical research in sound recording, which gave us the first talking books. Today, we’ve moved from analog to digital, racing forward at lightning speed into a new horizon born out of the internet. And our research has also evolved to shape technology policy and practice at both an organizational and societal level.
Foremost in our current endeavors is research that explains the impact artificial intelligence plays in society. This past January, AFB released the first in a series of studies focused on the benefits and risks AI will have across the entire disability community. We stand at a turning point in our history, when digital technology runs the risk of being one of society’s greatest disruptors, creating barriers while also serving as tools for independence.
By convening experts, we established consensus around the current direction of AI for people with disabilities. Our findings drive home the fact that technology does not become inclusive and accessible to people who are blind or have low vision without planning and intention. The research explores the use of AI as an assistive technology, accessibility concerns in AI literacy courses, the need for human oversight of AI-driven decisions, and more. Now we are working to explain the findings and the guiding principles stemming from this research to a diverse audience that creates, uses, and shapes policy around AI.
Our AI research is unique in explaining the cross-cutting impacts of AI for the disability community. This research was made possible through the support of the Delta Gamma Foundation with additional support of our technology research and outreach activities through the Ford Foundation. Their support has been critical to launch this initiative. However, our work is also fueled by the ongoing support of individual donors like you, whose commitment plays a crucial role. This progress is significant, but we haven’t been able to tell the whole story yet. There is much more work on AI ahead.
There’s no question that our world is rapidly changing each day. This is why I’m asking for your support of our continued groundbreaking research that enables our field to advocate for change through education and outreach. Every dollar directly impacts the work of our Public Policy and Research Institute, who are committed to finding solutions that will expand opportunity and inclusion for all.
Can I count on you to support our work on cutting-edge developments in society and technology? Your support allows us to unlock the answers to our biggest questions and effectively advocate for the roadmap our research reveals.
We couldn’t continue this pioneering work without your help, so I’m deeply thankful for your continued support.
Sincerely,
