A full braille cell is in the upper left-hand corner showing the numbering of the dots from 1 to 6.
Line 1 shows the braille characters for letters a through j, which are also the numbers 1 through 0. The text reads: Line 1, consisting of the first 10 letters of the alphabet is formed with dots 1,2,4,5 in the upper part of the braille cell. When preceded by the numeric indicator these cells have number values.
Line 2 shows the braille characters for letters k through t. The text reads: Line 2 adds dot 3 to each of the characters of Line 1.
Line 3 shows the braille characters for letters u, v, x, y, and z and the single-letter contractions and, for, of, the, and with. The text reads: Line 3 adds dots 3 and 6 to each of the characters of the first line.
Line 4 shows the contractions for ch, gh, sh, th, wh, ed, er, ou, ow, and w. The text reads: Line 4 adds dot 6 to each of the characters of the first line.
Line 5 shows the braille characters for comma, semi colon, colon, period, en, exclamation point, parentheses, open quotation mark or question mark, in, and close quotation mark. The text reads: Line 5 repeats the characters of Line 1 in the lower portion of the cell, using dots 2,3,5,6. Most of the characters have punctuation values.
Line 6 shows the braille characters for st, ing, the number sign, ar, apostrophe, and hyphen. The text reads: Line 6 is formed with dots 3,4,5,6.
Line 7 shows the braille characters for the general accent sign, three characters that are used for two-celled contractions, italic sign or decimal point, letter sign, and capital sign. The text reads: Line 7 is formed with dots 4,5,6.
Although punctuation and letter values are given for each configuration, most of the configurations have other meanings when used in conjunction with different braille characters.
